In Pursuit of a Vision > Case 7 > Streeter > Denver City

The Details:

Denver City and Auraria, the Commercial Emporium of the Pike’s Peak Gold Regions, in 1859. Possibly St. Louis, 1860. [catalog record]

Purchased with funds bequeathed by Thomas W. Streeter, 1968.

The Story:

AAS used some of the Streeter gift to acquire this first Denver directory for its collection of early American city directories. Denver was founded in 1858 after gold was found nearby.  This directory contains a brief history and description of Denver, a “List of Business Men” by occupation, and 15 pages of local business advertisements. At front is a lithographed plan of the city and a wood-engraved view of Denver (more impressionistic than accurate).
