In Pursuit of a Vision > Case 6 > Peach > American Psalmody

The Details:

Frank J. Metcalf. American Psalmody, or, Titles of Books, Containing Tunes Printed in America from 1721-1820. New York: C. F. Heartman, 1917. [catalog record]

Purchased from the heirs of Bishop Robert W. Peach, 1938.

The Story:

Frank J. Metcalf was the foremost bibliographer of American hymnals. He presented this deluxe copy of his American Psalmody to Rev. Robert Westly Peach, who heavily annotated it based on his own collection. AAS purchased Peach’s 6,000 hymnals in 1938; when merged in 1945 with Metcalf’s own holdings, the Society's collection of early American hymnals became the world’s best.
