The Story:
Thomas Mabbott donated the nucleus of AAS’s racy newspaper collection. Such papers catered to urban males eager to read about, and partake in, a city’s sporting, theatrical, and especially sexual pleasures. Shortly after publishing this issue, The Weekly Rake’s nineteen-year-old editor was convicted for obscenity. Thousands of copies circulated, yet today they are extremely rare.
