In Pursuit of a Vision > Case 6 > Metcalf > Lyon's Urania

The Details:

James Lyon. Urania, or a Choice Collection of Psalm-Tunes, Anthems, and Hymns Philadelphia: possibly William Bradford, 1761. [catalog record]

Bequest of Frank J. Metcalf, 1945.

The Story:

Perhaps the rarest of the nearly 2,500 American hymnals Frank Metcalf bequeathed to AAS, this copy of James Lyons’s Urania includes ninety-six hymns suitable for various religious denominations. Most were from English tune books, though some were original American compositions. The first American printing of “God Save the King” appears here, with new lyrics appropriate for a sacred hymn.
