In Pursuit of a Vision > Case 9 > Brigham > Aaron Willard

The Details:

Paul Revere. Aaron Willard clock label. Boston, July 1781. [catalog record]

Gift of the Wells Historical Museum, 1954.

The Story:

While researching Paul Revere’s Engravings (AAS, 1954), Clarence S. Brigham went to great lengths to locate every engraving by the American patriot. His quest for this clock label is an example of his tenacity. In 1915, as shown by his notes, he learned of the label’s existence from Revere’s daybooks. Over twenty years later, having been unsuccessful in locating an impression, Brigham placed an advertisement seeking the public’s help. His strategy worked and by 1954 he had recorded over twenty examples, in three variant printings.
