The Story:

This engraving from the Tinker collection records the rapid growth of New Orleans, whose population of 7,000 in 1803 had increased to more than 33,000 by 1815.  The map depicts the city’s seven wards and the breastworks that had proved crucial to Andrew Jackson’s victory over the British at the Battle of New Orleans in 1815.
