In Pursuit of a Vision > Case 5 > Farwell > Halley's A New Plan

The Details:

Edmond Halley. A New Plan of the Harbour of Boston in New England … Watercolor and ink on paper, 1702. [catalog record]

Gift of the estate of John W. Farwell, 1942-1943.

The Story:

John W. Farwell’s bequest more than doubled the Society’s cartographic holdings, and included this rare chart of Boston Harbor. Edmond Halley set sail to chart the Atlantic’s magnetic fields in 1698.  His elegant manuscript map was probably used to create the engraved version in The English Pilot (1707).  In 1705, Halley calculated the orbit of the comet which bears his name.
