The Story:
Of all Edward Tinker’s rare Louisiana imprints, the most prized may be Les Cenelles, the first U.S. anthology of African-American verse. The editor twice defied a ban forbidding Creole New Orleaners from publishing, first by editing the periodical L’Album Littéraire (1843), then by compiling Les Cenelles. The finely printed and typographically whimsical volume contains 85 poems by seventeen different Creole authors.
