The Details:

John Greenleaf Whittier. Poems Written During the Progress of the Abolition Question in the United States, between the Years 1830 and 1838.Boston: Isaac Knapp, 1837. [catalog record]

Gift of Herbert E. Lombard, 1923.

The Story:

Whittier’s Poems collects his abolitionist verses for the first time. This copy, the second issue with pages 97-103 added, was Whittier’s own and bears his characteristic purple ink manuscript corrections to several poems. Whittier had little editorial control over the first edition, but he made amends the following year by issuing an expanded edition. This volume was among 600 titles by American authors donated by Rev. Lombard in 1923.
