In Pursuit of a Vision > Case 5 > Jones > Day of Doom...

The Details:

Michael Wigglesworth. The Day of Doom, or, a Poetical Description of the Great and Last Judgment. Cambridge, Massachusetts: Samuel Green, 1666. [catalog record]

Gift of Matt B. Jones, 1929.

The Story:

Matt B. Jones greatly enhanced AAS’s poetry holdings when he gave the Society The Day of Doom.  This is the most complete of the three copies known to exist of the first American bestseller. The storyline describing the Last Judgment in graphic Calvinistic terms must have appealed to early Americans: the 1,800 copies of the first edition (1662) sold out quickly and this second edition followed in 1666.
