In Pursuit of a Vision > Case 4 > Taylor > Branch's Alligator

The Details:

Stephen H. Branch’s Alligator. New York, July 11, 1858; August 7, 1858. [catalog record]

Gift of Charles Henry Taylor, n.d.

The Story:

This is one of the more unusual newspapers donated by Charles Henry Taylor. The publisher received the nickname, “Alligator Branch,” as a New York Herald reporter. While en route to California, he described alligators that climbed trees—one of many fabrications in his dispatches. The Society holds a complete run of the Alligator, a muckraking weekly, partially written by Branch from jail after a conviction for libel.
