In Pursuit of a Vision > Case 9 > Brigham > Rules for the Society

The Details:

Cotton Mather. Rules for the Society of Negroes. 1693. Boston: probably Bartholomew Green, ca. 1714. AAS American Broadsides Collection. [catalog record]

The Story:

This broadside is an example of a rare printing made widely available via microprint technology. Written by Cotton Mather, the text reprints the 1683 rules for Boston’s Society of Negroes. The microprint version was issued as one image on a card, each of which held one hundred very small photographic reproductions of primary source material. When viewed on a special reader the small type was fully legible.
