In Pursuit of a Vision > Case 1 > Thomas > A Monumental...

The Details:

A Monumental Inscription on the Fifth of March. Together with a Few Lines on the Enlargement of Ebenezer Richardson, Convicted of Murder. Boston: Isaiah Thomas, 1772. [catalog record]

The Story:

This rare broadside bearing a woodcut by Paul Revere exemplifies the patriotic nature of much of Isaiah Thomas’s printing work before the Revolution. It draws a parallel between the acquittal of British officers on murder charges after the Boston Massacre and the perceived British favoritism that accompanied the trial of a locally despised customs official, Ebenezer Richardson, for murder. Richardson’s release from prison impelled Thomas to express his outrage via this broadside.
