In Pursuit of a Vision > Case 7 > Streeter > Act to Incorporate...

The Details:

Madison, Indianapolis, and Lafayette Rail-Road Company. An Act to Incorporate the Madison, Indianapolis and Lafayette Rail-Road Company, Passed … February 2, 1832. Madison, Indiana: Arion & Lodge, 1832. [catalog record]

Gift of Thomas W. Streeter, 1950.

The Story:

The 1929 stock market crash forced Thomas W. Streeter to sell much of his early Americana. He rebounded by embarking on a new, relatively inexpensive field: publications documenting the early nineteenth-century transportation revolution. His collection of pre-1841 canal and railroad material was the best in private hands when he gave the bulk of it to the Society.  One treasure was this pamphlet, one of two recorded copies of the earliest Indiana railroad imprint.
