The Details:
Zenas Leonard. Narrative of the Adventures of Zenas Leonard … Who Spent Five Years in Trapping for Furs, Trading with the Indians … Clearfield, Pennsylvania: D.W. Moore, 1839. [catalog record]
Gift of Donald McKay Frost, 1948.
The Story:
Frost’s gift included many Western autobiographies and biographies, such as Zenas Leonard’s Narrative. While engaged in trans-Mississippi fur trapping, Leonard joined the 1833 expedition seeking a route from the Great Salt Lake to California. He was one of the first white men to see Yosemite. Leonard’s stories were serialized in a newspaper in Pennsylvania (his home state) and proved so popular that they were reissued as a book.
