Gift of Donald McKay Frost, 1947.

The Story:

In 1850, team of artists and photographers were engaged to prepare a giant panoramic painting of California’s gold fields and boom towns. From 1852 to 1854, this “Pantoscope”—a rolling panorama measuring ten feet high and over a thousand feet long—toured the northeast.  This souvenir program contains accounts of the dangers the party faced out west, newspaper testimonials, and poetry evocative of the scenes depicted.
