The Details:

James Harvey Barnum. The Traveller’s Guide, or, the Life of James H. Barnum. Great Barrington, Massachusetts: James H. Barnum, 1847. [catalog record]

Gift of Donald McKay Frost, 1948.

The Story:

Donald McKay Frost gave the Society many western-themed narratives.  Barnum’s Traveller’s Guide may be the rarest and least well-known.  The author spins a series of yarns relating to his days as a sailor, but he also includes stories of overland travel from Boston to Oregon.  This trip he classifies as just as dangerous as being held captive by pirates or nearly being hanged in Guadalupe.
