The Details:
Herman Melville. John Marr and Other Sailors, with Some Sea-Pieces. New York: The De Vinne Press, 1888. [catalog record]
Gift of Charles Henry Taylor, 1926.
The Story:
Taylor was a major donor to AAS’s fast-growing nineteenth-century American literature holdings. Taylor—and by proxy AAS—benefited from his friendship with Boston bookseller P. K. Foley, whose American Authors, 1795-1895 clearly delineated the new collecting field. Taylor gave AAS a virtually complete collection of Melville first editions, including two “black tulips”: John Marr (1888) and Timoleon (1891). Each was privately printed in only 25 copies.
