In Pursuit of a Vision > Case 6 > Tinker > Le Capitaine May et...

The Details:

Félix de Courmont. Le Capitaine May et le General de la Vega sur les Bords du Rio Grande, Opera comique en un Acte Nouvelle Orléans: J. L. Sollée, 1847. [catalog record]

Gift of Edward Larocque Tinker, 1950.

The Story:

Tinker’s generosity brought to AAS rich holdings related to the diverse cultural life of antebellum Louisiana. The one-act opera Le Capitaine May is set during the Mexican-American War. Written in French with an English translation in parallel columns, the printer charmingly inserted question marks instead of exclamation points (“I am overpowered with fear and alarm?”). The music, unfortunately, is lost.
