The Details:
Mother Goose’s Quarto: or Melodies Complete. Boston: Munroe & Francis, ca. 1824-1827. [catalog record]
Gift of Charles Lemuel Nichols, 1929.
The Story:
This hand-colored Munroe & Francis square-format Mother Goose is among the earliest (and handsomest) examples. Three-quarter-page wood engravings are used throughout, as seen in this illustration for “Sing, Sing.” On the opposite page, the wood engraving for “Ride a Cock Horse” dispenses with a border—the seamless transition between illustration and text gives the entire page a modern feel.
