In Pursuit of a Vision > Case 6 > Papantonio > Two Treatises...

The Details:

Francis Skinner. Bookbinding, Newport, Rhode Island, ca. 1750, on: Jeremiah Burroughs. Two Treatises of Mr. Jeremiah Burroughs. The First of Earthly MindednessLondon: Peter Cole, 1649. [catalog record]

Bequest of Michael Papantonio, 1978.

The Story:

Virtually unique among the corpus of early American bindings, the covers on this volume are tooled to a panel design using a single decorative roll, the center completely and curiously filled with a large calligraphic panel stamp reading “Newport.” Binder Francis Skinner creatively employed the large stamp, as it was probably intended for leather pocketbooks, or the “Cartouch Boxes” advertised on his binder’s ticket.
