In Pursuit of a Vision > Case 6 > Tinker > Laussat, Prefet...

The Details:

Laussat, Préfet Colonial, Commissaire du Gouvernement Français, … 30 Novembre 1803 …New Orleans: Jean Baptiste Le Seur Fontaine, 1803. [catalog record]

Gift of Edward Larocque Tinker, 1949.

The Story:

Edward L. Tinker modestly wrote of his 1949 gift, “Some of the items are in pretty poor shape: New Orleans is the hardest city in the country on such things.” Thankfully, Tinker’s gift proved largely pristine, including this edict of the French colonial prefect Pierre Clément de Laussat, printed the day France retook Louisiana from Spain before ceding possession to the U.S. weeks later.
