The Story:
Paine’s many gifts to AAS included important Americana. By 1783, when the Treaty of Paris was signed, nearly 30,000 Loyalists had fled from New York, Boston, and other U.S. ports. Most settled in Nova Scotia and the newly established province of New Brunswick. In 1785 the Loyalist boom town of Saint John was granted a royal charter, establishing it as Canada’s first incorporated city.
