The Story:
Bemis was an avid collector of the works of Bret Harte. His bequest greatly strengthened the Society’s Harte holdings and included this wonderful photolithographically reproduced version of “To the Pliocene Skull.” Harte’s famous satirical poem was occasioned by the “discovery” of the Calaveras Skull in a California mine in 1866.
