The Story:
John W. Farwell gave one of the earliest of the many Indian captivity narratives now at AAS. John Norton’s very rare The Redeemed Captive is not to be confused with John Williams’s better-known account of the 1704 Deerfield raid, although Norton’s narrative covers similar ground. In spare but gripping prose, Norton recounts hardships endured by captives taken in 1746 from Fort Massachusetts, near present-day Williamstown.
