In Pursuit of a Vision > Case 5 > Farwell > Redeemed Captive...

The Details:

John Norton. The Redeemed Captive. Being a Narrative of the Taking and Carrying into Captivity the Reverend Mr. John NortonBoston: Samuel Kneeland and Timothy Green, 1748. [catalog record]

Gift of the estate of John W. Farwell, 1942-1943.

The Story:

John W. Farwell gave one of the earliest of the many Indian captivity narratives now at AAS.  John Norton’s very rare The Redeemed Captive is not to be confused with John Williams’s better-known account of the 1704 Deerfield raid, although Norton’s narrative covers similar ground. In spare but gripping prose, Norton recounts hardships endured by captives taken in 1746 from Fort Massachusetts, near present-day Williamstown.
