In Pursuit of a Vision > Case 10 > Lapides > Harry; the Boy...

The Details:

Harry; the Boy That Did Not Own Himself. Boston: American Tract Society, ca. 1863. [catalog record]

Purchase, Linda F. and Julian L. Lapides Fund, 2009.

The Story:

This fine example of an antislavery children’s book is a chronicle of one boy’s perilous journey, from his abduction by slave traders to his escape to Canada. The book was acquired using the Linda F. and Julian L. Lapides Fund. The Lapides endowment was AAS’s first fund devoted exclusively to children’s literature, and for the past twenty-five years it has provided crucial support for acquisitions. Within the last decade alone, AAS has added over 700 titles with the support of this fund.
