The Story:
Johnston was a Boston satirist who skillfully captured an individual’s strengths and foibles and earned the nickname “The American Cruikshank.” This tavern interior is typical of his work. In 1933, Charles Henry Taylor donated several Johnston lithographs to AAS. Librarian Clarence S. Brigham contacted local Johnston descendants for more information and discovered that, due to the Depression, the heirs wished to sell. Brigham made a list of desired items, a price was agreed upon, and Taylor generously funded the entire purchase.
