The Story:
Best known for his textbook A Compendious System of Midwifery, the Philadelphian William Potts Dewees standardized obstetric practices in the United States. This finely executed portrait illustrates how quickly American printmakers mastered the new process of lithography. The print was pulled by a young Nathaniel Currier who, at age 20, had just completed his apprenticeship and was working as a pressman in Philadelphia.
