The Story:
This print of two men debating the day’s news is an example of the intricacies of transatlantic publishing. An American artist painted the image while studying in Düsseldorf, Germany, then sold the painting to a Baltimore patron. A French firm published the painting as a lithograph and the sheets were sold in shops in New York, London, Berlin and Paris. This impression was acquired as part of a gift made by AAS member Jay Last who has provided generous financial support for building expansion, fellowships in visual culture, and acquisitions. With Last’s support, AAS curators have added some 550 prints to the collection.
