The Details:
Nathaniel Paine, compiler, Freaks of Nature Illustrated. 1891.
Gift of the Nathaniel Paine Estate, 1920.
The Story:
Paine compiled extra-illustrated volumes and scrapbooks on a variety of subjects. In so doing, he preserved much ephemeral, but important, primary source material. This volume includes photographs, pamphlets, tickets, and clippings related to people and animals displayed in theaters, side shows, and circuses. Moung Phoset and Mahphoon, both of whom suffered from hypertrichosis, were brought from Burma and were exhibited by P. T. Barnum.
