The Story:
In November 1860, four days after the presidential election put Abraham Lincoln in the White House, South Carolina scheduled a secession convention. Considered to be the first Confederate imprint, this broadside announced to the public the convention’s resolution that South Carolina would secede. This sheet was removed from a wall in Charleston by Boston-born author Caroline Howard Gilman, who mailed the broadside to Massachusetts so it could be preserved.
