Gift of Lucy Chase, 1879.

The Story:

On April 10, 1865, one week after the Confederate government fled Richmond and a day after Lee’s surrender at Appomattox, Lucy and Sarah Chase visited Jefferson Davis’s abandoned office. There they gathered up several discarded Confederate documents. Among them was this copy of the final Confederate session laws to be published, covering the May-June 1864 session, specially bound for Davis.
