In Pursuit of a Vision > Case 3 > Paine > Photographs...

The Details:

Nathaniel Paine. Isaiah Thomas House. 1887; The Worcester Camera Club at Merriam’s Corner, Concord Mass.1892; and White Birch Tree (The Wizard), Intervale, N.H. 1892. [catalog record]

Gift of the Nathaniel Paine Estate, 1920.

The Story:

The development of portable cameras in the 1880s transformed the way amateur historians like Nathaniel Paine recorded the world. Today Paine’s photographs serve as unique visual records of vanished historical places: the Thomas house was torn down early in the twentieth century, and the Wizard Birch, under which Henry Ward Beecher preached in the 1870s to throngs of White Mountain tourists, no longer stands.
