The Story:
William Bentley met the young Boston engraver and artist Samuel Harris in 1805. He eventually commissioned several portraits for his art collection—which he bequeathed in its entirety to AAS—including this arresting drawing of Elisha Cooke, Jr., the Boston doctor and politician who famously argued with royal officials over New England’s colonial rights of representation.
