In Pursuit of a Vision > Case 10 > AAS > Chess Monthly

The Details:

Daniel W. Fiske and Paul Morphy, eds. The Chess Monthly. New York, February 1859. AAS Periodical Collection. [catalog record]

The Story:

It has long been common to remove outer wrappers when binding periodicals. However, wrappers often contain important information and AAS has made it a priority to collect periodicals with wrappers intact. The editors of The Chess Monthly were the head of the New York Chess Club and the unofficial chess world champion. Only on the wrapper, however, are they identified. The wrapper also contains advertisements and—perhaps most important—the answers to chess problems published in a previous issue.
