In Pursuit of a Vision > Case 10 > Adopt > Southern Chivalry

The Details:

David Claypoole Johnston. Early Development of Southern Chivalry. India ink and wash on paper, ca. 1864. [catalog record]

Purchase, Adopt-A-Book funds, 2009.

The Story:

This disturbing sketch by satirist David Claypoole Johnston was created as the Civil War was drawing to a close. The image was probably intended to become a lithograph or book illustration, though no evidence has been found that it was ever reproduced.  AAS acquired the piece with funds raised during its first Adopt-a-Book event, held in 2008. This annual acquisitions fundraiser has raised nearly $100,000 to date.
