The Details:

Nicolas-Eustache Maurin, after Gilbert Stuart. George Washington, First President of the United States.
Boston: Pendleton, 1825-1828. [catalog record]

Gift of Charles Henry Taylor, n.d.

The Story:

This image from a set depicting the first five presidents was drawn in Paris and printed in Boston. John Pendleton took Stuart’s original paintings to France where they were copied on stone. He then brought the prepared lithographic stones, a press, and trained French pressmen back to Boston.  Charles Henry Taylor collected multiple examples of the five prints, including impressions owned by a former Pendleton printer.
