In Pursuit of a Vision > Case 1 > Mather Crocker > Family Coat...

The Details:

Thomas Johnston, attributed. Mather Family Coat of Arms. Watercolor and ink on paper, before 1767. [catalog record]

Gift of Hannah Mather Crocker, 1814.

The Story:

Hannah Mather Crocker preserved this family coat of arms along with the family library and manuscripts. The artist and engraver Thomas Johnston was likely its creator, as he was one of the few heraldic painters at work in Boston in the mid-eighteenth century. The American Mathers traced their coat of arms back to 1602 and William Mather of Shropshire (noted here as Salop), England.
