Tags identifying the state and region where the item was printed can be used to search for self-published texts within a specific geographic area. You may also be interested in the interactive map showing the publication location of each text.
Geographic region was identified using the current U.S. census categorizations for regions. For the map used to identify region, see https://www2.census.gov/geo/pdfs/maps-data/maps/reference/us_regdiv.pdf.
Information on the population of the place of publication was taken from U.S. census records from the nearest decade. For example, an item published in 1825 lists census data from 1820, while an item published in 1826 uses census data from 1830. The population data was rounded for ease of use.
