Using the tags “job printer”/ “printed by” / No publication information

These tags were added to explain why texts were identified as possibly self-published. For more on levels of certainty in self-publication, see here.

Job printers were identified by searching the American Antiquarian Society catalog for other works printed by the same printer. Typical items printed by a job printer include yearbooks for universities, pamphlets for local organizations or companies, and other miscellaneous works typically spanning genres and themes.

Texts with “printed by,” “steam and job press,” “press of,” or “printer” in the imprint were also labeled as possibly self-published, since the person listed in the imprint is identified as the printer and not necessarily the publisher.

Texts lacking any publication or printing information in the imprint were also labeled as possibly self-published. Although nothing is known about their printing or publication from the title page, having no publishing or printing information may be an indication that the work was done by a job printer.
