In Pursuit of a Vision > Case 9 > Brigham > Brownsville Gazette

The Details:

William Campbell, ed. Brownsville Gazette. Brownsville, Pennsylvania, May 21, 1808. Purchase, Duplicates Fund, 2004. [catalog record]

The Story:

Clarence S. Brigham’s History and Bibliography of American Newspapers, 1690-1820 (AAS, 1947), was a landmark in newspaper bibliography. Thirty six years of research resulted in detailed publishing histories and censuses for 2,120 titles. For 194 papers, Brigham was unable to locate any extant issues. It has been an AAS priority to acquire these “lost” newspapers, and this issue of the Brownsville Gazette is an example acquired in 2004. The accompanying working page from Brigham’s bibliography shows his draft entry for the title.
