The Details:

Charles Evans. Working slips for American Bibliography, housed in corset box.

Bequest of Charles Evans, 1935.

The Story:

The bibliography of early Americans imprints was realized, if imperfectly, in Charles Evans’s fourteen-volume American Bibliography (1903-1959).  Evans intended to describe all imprints through 1820 and four decades of careful research yielded 35,854 entries. Much of Evan’s work was done at the Society and AAS preserves his research slips for the period after 1800. The parsimonious scholar used both sides of each slip, hence the cards for 1801-1820 retain on their versos entries for 1639-1800.
