Gift of the estate of William Bentley, 1820.

The Story:

In his will, William Bentley designated as his executor his nephew William Bentley Fowle and directed that his library be divided between AAS and Allegheny College in Pennsylvania, with the remainder to go to Fowle. Fowle’s inventory shows the distribution, with items marked “A” going to Allegheny College and those marked “T” (for “Thomas”) to AAS.
