In Pursuit of a Vision > Case 8 > Hosmer > Crane's Bill

The Details:

Anthony Hochstein. Crane’s Bill. Watercolor on paper, ca. 1860-1895.

Gift of Herbert H. Hosmer, 1978.

The Story:

This watercolor was done for a never-published book entitled “Flower Legends.” Hochstein’s eye for detail shines in the whimsical scene of frogs enjoying cocktails while a crane watches. The watercolor reminds the modern researcher that not all works produced for children were actually published. Eleven illustrations and the manuscript text for “Flower Legends” are preserved at AAS, thanks to the generosity of donor Herbert Hosmer.
