In Pursuit of a Vision > Case 7 > Streeter > Laws of the Territory

The Details:

Northwest Territory. Laws of the Territory of the United States North-West of the Ohio … Cincinnati: W. Maxwell, 1796. [catalog record]

Purchased with funds bequeathed by Thomas W. Streeter, 1967.

The Story:

The most expensive AAS purchase at the Streeter sales, acquired after spirited bidding, was this copy of the first book printed in present-day Ohio. Often referred to as the “Maxwell Code” after its printer, 1,000 copies were issued. However, of the twenty-odd copies known to survive, only five (including this one) are perfect. Today this copy is a cornerstone of AAS’s outstanding collection of early Ohio imprints.
