In Pursuit of a Vision > Case 3 > Brinley > Mather's Defense...

The Details:

Richard Mather. A Defence of the Answer and Arguments of the Synod met in Boston in the year 1662Cambridge, Massachusetts: S. Green and M. Johnson for Hezekiah Usher, 1664. [catalog record]

Purchased with funds bequeathed by George Brinley, 1879.

The Story:

The Brinley bequest offered AAS an opportunity to add to its strong collection of Mather family publications. The first sale included some 400 Mather family titles. Of these, AAS acquired over sixty. Among them was this rare imprint, unsigned but largely written by Richard Mather. Mather presented this copy to Thomas Shepard II, minister at Cambridge, who recorded the gift (and Mather’s authorship) on the title page.
