The Story:
This work was acquired at the third Cooke sale. After alienating Massachusetts authorities, Roger Williams left to settle Providence Plantations. In The Bloudy Tenent he called for separation of church and state and religious freedom for all. So incendiary were these concepts that Parliament ordered the book to be burned. Nonetheless, protections for religious freedom were granted as part of Rhode Island’s royal charter, and the colony became a haven for the persecuted.
