Purchased with funds bequeathed by Joseph J. Cooke, 1883.

The Story:

This volume was the Society’s most expensive purchase at the Cooke sales ($85).  John Smith’s account was first published in 1624. This is the sixth and final reissue, with modifications but with letterpress unchanged. The engraved folding map of “Ould Virginia,” is surrounded by vignettes of Native Americans, into each of which has been inserted the heroic figure of the author, Captain Smith.
