Description

In 1699, Bartholomew Green, son of Samuel Green, printed a translation of A Confession of FaithOwned and ConsentedUntoby the Elders & Messengers of the ChurchesAssembledatBoston in NewEngland,May12,1680. This Confession of Faith outlines the essential religious doctrine that Puritans in New England were to adhere to. Naturally, Puritan minister Grindal Rawson of Mendon, Massachusetts, thought this text was important enough for him to undertake the work of translating it into Algonquian. The text of the work organizes religious doctrine in English and Algonquian on facing pages.
