Ancient Works, Marietta, Ohio - The ancient earthworks at Marietta, the oldest town in Ohio, on the left bank of the Muskingum River at its confluence with the Ohio River, were frequently described by travelers and were featured in Caleb Atwater’s “Description of the Antiquities Discovered in the State of Ohio and Other Western States,” published by Isaiah Thomas in the first volume of the Society’s Transactions in 1820.
